A Change of Plans - WNCCWRT heads to Chickamauga in October

Change is in the wind.  The Round Table is heading to Chickamauga for a two-day, one-night tour of the Chickamauga-Chattanooga NMP.  A busy fall schedule has limited the availability of guides to the originally planned tour of the Dalton-Resaca (GA) sites and battlefields and has led to this change for the Round Table.

Program Director Richard Smith has come up with a very viable alternative, a tour of Chickamauga, every bit as worthy of your participation as the previously planned excursion.  Smith, in quick order, has developed the substitute tour hosted in part by Round Table favorite Park Historian Jim Ogden, and the dates are set for October 28 & 29.  Further details are available in September newsletter or by contacting Richard Smith, 828-293-5924.

The Battle Bentonville Has a New Epilogue

In what is to be a paradox of purposes, the final at the beginning, Derrick Brown of the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources will address the WNCCWRT’s inaugural meeting about the present day consequences of North Carolina’s last battle.
Brown, whose day job is Assistant Site Manager at Bentonville, will make a presentation of “A Monumental Mystery:  The Battle of Bentonville and its Lost Confederates Soldiers” on March 14, 7pm at Western Carolina University HFR Auditorium.
The preliminaries events for his visit begin with the meet ‘n greet with a casual dinner at Bogarts in Sylva, 5 pm.  This will be followed with a light refreshment social at HFR Auditorium, 6:30 pm.  We look forward to seeing all there and as always admission is gratis.

Hey! We're Going to Virginia

Our Vice-President and Program Director has just released plans for the WNCCWRTs Spring Tour.  Richard Smith has tentatively planned a four-day and three-night trip to the upper Shenandoah Valley from Friday, May 20 through Monday, May 23, 2016.  The schedule includes stops at Cedar Mountain, Brandy Station and possibly Culpepper Court House on Saturday. Then Sunday would include Cedar Creek and New Market Battlefield & Museum.

Transit days to and from are set for Friday, May 20 and Monday, May 23.  Participants will be expected to drive themselves or car pool  as van rental cost is prohibitive.  Individuals are encouraged to coordinate among themselves regarding ride-sharing or with Board assistance once the travel roster is confirmed.

Accommodations will be at the Days Inn in New Market, VA.  Eight rooms have been reserved under the name of Civil War Round Table.  The cost of the room is $77.15 per night with a continental breakfast provided by the Days Inn. The Hotel phone number is 1-540-740-4100 and rooms must be reserved by no later than April 20 to receive the discounted rate.

A $50 non-refundable deposit to the WNCCWRT will be required by May 9, 2016.  The deposit is to cover ticket cost, incidental fees, etc. incurred by the trip.  However, a commitment that late will not guarantee the above room rate.  Final details and updates will be forthcoming at the March 14 meeting.  Members, their guests, and the interested public-at-large are encouraged to come, learn, and enjoy.  Those wanting to make reservations or needing further information, please contact Richard Smith 828-293-5924.

The WNCCWRT Book Raffle Donations

The Secretary requests of those members wishing to do so, please donate those Civil War books gathering dust on your shelves. It can benefit you and the WNCCWRT. For you …, a tax deduction …, for the Round Table another revenue stream.

Did you know that the monthly BOOK RAFFLE, book sales and other memorabilia sales contribute approximately 20% to the Round Table’s coffers. Or another way to look at it is a year’s worth of raffles pays for the cost of one meeting and part of another. So bring what you have available, whether books or memorabilia to the meeting when possible. A book becomes more valuable every time it is read.
